Rock climbing at Mickey’s Beach

Get Your Climb On

Meetup.com helped us again with finding fun things to do on the weekend. This time, we joined a rock climbing group “Get Your Climb On” on a trip to a place called Mickey’s Beach. The group seemed fun, and the destination was fantastic (rock climbing on beautiful Pacific coastline? Sign me up!). The only downside was having to leave our dog Lily at home, due to annoying “no dog” rules at the location.

Mickey’s Beach

Mickey’s Beach is located in the Marin County, about half an hour drive of San Francisco. For us, coming from Fremont, it was a longer drive (about 1.5 hours), but it was definitely worth it! The weather was absolutely gorgeous – bright and sunny. As we pulled in to the small parking lot on the edge of Highway 1, we were rewarded with amazing views of the ocean and the jagged rocks scattered on the beach. We found the other people from the group quickly (all that bulky climbing gear made it pretty easy), and took the rough trail heading down to the ocean.

Rabbits and Nudists

When we got down to the water, we were in for a surprise. It turned out that Mickey’s Beach was also popular with the local nudists. There were quite a few of them already there, lounging in the sun. Trying hard not to stare, we started to unpack our gear. This is when a strange looking man carrying a rabbit on his shoulder showed up on the trail. When he finally reached the edge of the water, he let the rabbit loose to run freely on rocks and sand.

Rock climbing

Fortunately, all of the bizarreness couldn’t distract us from the main objective of the day – rock climbing. Some people went off for some bouldering (climbing without rope on smaller boulders), and the others set up roped climbs on some of the taller rocks. We went for the taller climbs. This allowed us to have fun climbing, but also to get a good look at the amazingly beautiful surroundings from high up on the cliff. It was a surreal experience.

Eventually, everybody got tired. We spent a bit more time chilling out on the beach, talking to people, and making new friends. What a great trip and fantastic group of friendly and fun people! We will definitely be joining this meetup again.

  1. Too cool! I wanna go and climb!

  2. I love stunning rock formations in California. So many I can’t choose which one’s the best. This is something that I need to go to when I go back to Fremont. High Five, Fremont. :D
I just went to Black’s Beach aka Nude Beach and I was also in for surprise. And speaking of leash-free beache, you can never go wrong with Ocean Beach aka Dog Beach. :D

  3. Very nice series of photos!
